After graduating from college with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, I embarked on a career as a registered mental health nurse. Always fascinated by what makes people tick, I became certified in psychiatric care and focused on counseling families with children. I developed expertise in family systems and often acted to protect children who were at risk.
In 1994 I retired from nursing. Building on a lifelong love of animals, I began working with dogs, starting with boarding, exercising and caring for others’ dogs. I soon began my education as a dog trainer, graduating from the San Francisco SPCA Academy for Dog Trainers. This course provided a thorough grounding in learning theory and positive-reinforcement training methods, as well as special training in counseling dog owners.
As I worked as a private dog trainer, I often found myself working with families with children and dogs. I saw that when problems occurred between dogs and children, parents frequently needed guidance in handling those problems. Combining dog training with my previous work with families was a natural step, and I concentrated on helping families with children and dogs. My current dog training program focuses almost exclusively on helping families with dogs and children.
