FAQ

What training method do you use?

I use positive, reward-based training. Dogs love to be rewarded for good behavior, so they respond happily. And because dogs respond so well, it’s easy for people to train their dogs. It’s a win-win for everyone!

How many lessons will it take to train my dog?

The short answer is it depends. Each person is unique, and that’s true of dogs too, so there’s no one answer that fits all situations. Some people find just a few lessons are enough, others need help for longer.

Do you offer lesson packages to help with the cost of training?

Yes! I offer several different training packages at a reduced rate, and I’m happy to make up a special package to fit your needs.

What happens at the first meeting?

The first meeting is an evaluation of your situation; I first watch what’s happening  between your dog, your children and the rest of the family, explain to you what I’m seeing and what changes would be helpful, and then start you off with a plan for training.

How long does that first meeting last?

The first meeting usually lasts 1½ to 2 hours. Lessons after the initial evaluation usually last  about 1 hour.

 How important is safe supervision?

Very important! Safe supervision is key to keeping your home safe and calm and avoiding problems. At the first meeting, we talk about the specifics of supervision, so you have a clear plan for managing your dog around your children.

What’s the difference between training and management?

Training is teaching the dog to respond to a signal or command. Management involves monitoring your dog so unwanted behaviors don’t happen in the first place.

How is management used in homes with dogs and children?

Management is an ongoing and important part of keeping your home calm and safe. I will show you easy ways to manage the relationship between your dog and your children so that everyone is more relaxed and comfortable.

 Do you offer training classes?

No, at this time I do only private, in-home training.  However, in the future I may offer classes, so check back from time to time.
